Protect your income and paperwork
Do the time-sensitive things first. Hold off on big career decisions.
- Apply for job-loss benefits. If your country or region has them, apply as soon as you can. Rules, waiting periods, and deadlines differ by location.
- Read any severance or settlement offer before signing. Take the time you need, ask questions, and get final terms in writing.
- Gather your documents. Final pay details, an employment record or letter, and benefit and leave balances. Ask whether a former supervisor can serve as a reference.
- Check your health coverage. Find out when it ends and what you can sign up for next. Enrollment windows can be short.
- Write down your monthly essentials and use the runway calculator below. If a bill will be difficult to pay, contact the landlord or lender early and ask about options.
